Why it's listed

One official app for your legal files and a legit free channel lineup—download from plex.tv only.

Plex is a legal media server app: stream movies, music, and photos you already own from a home PC or NAS. It also bundles thousands of free, ad-supported on-demand titles and live TV channels inside the same apps—no server required for that free catalog. Plex Pass is optional for power-user server features.

Self-hosted libraries need storage and setup; some server features nudge Plex Pass.

How to set up Plex

Stream movies and shows you own to every TV—free tier first, Plex Pass only if you actually need the extras.

Before you start

  • Folder of video files or rips you legally own
  • Always-on computer or NAS
  • Decide free vs Plex Pass (hardware transcoding, mobile sync)—check plex.tv/plans
  1. Install Plex Media Server

Download from plex.tv for Mac/Windows/Linux or use NAS package. Sign in with a free Plex account—required for remote streaming and apps.

  2. Create libraries

Add Movies and TV Shows libraries pointing at your folders. Use naming Plex expects: Movie (Year)/Movie (Year).ext or Show/Season 01/S01E01.ext.

  3. Let metadata scan complete

First scan pulls posters and descriptions. Fix mismatches with Fix Match before inviting family.

  4. Install client apps

Plex on Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, phones. Sign in with same account. Server should appear on LAN automatically.

  5. Test direct play vs transcode

Play one 1080p and one 4K file. Settings → Dashboard → Status shows if CPU is transcoding. Free tier transcodes with CPU limits—Pass adds hardware transcoding on some setups.

  6. Decide on Plex Pass

Skip Pass if direct play works everywhere. Consider Pass for offline mobile sync or tuner/DVR—don't pay preemptively.

Troubleshooting

Server not found on TV
Same network first. Use server IP:32400 if discovery fails.
Buffering on 4K
Client can't direct play—enable hardware transcoding (Pass) or keep 1080p copies.

Keep it working

  • Optimize database monthly in server settings
  • Update server app when prompted
