Before you start
- Know your RAM (8 vs 16 vs 32 GB) and GPU if any

GUI path: LM Studio or Jan. CLI + ecosystem: Ollama (see our Ollama guide). Don't install both stacks day one.
Pull one small model
Start llama3.2:3b or qwen2.5:3b. Run real household tasks: meal plan, email tone, summarize PDF paste.
Add UI if needed
If terminal-only Ollama feels cold, add Open WebUI on desktop Docker or use Jan.
Define cloud escape hatch
